Siberian Tiger
One
of the most stunningly gorgeous animals on earth, the
tiger is poetry in motion. The tiger’s body can be as long as twelve
feet from head to tail. Siberian and Bengal
tigers have reached weights in excess of eight hundred pounds. Solitary
by nature, the tiger spends most of its time patrolling staked out
territory, which can exceed four hundred square miles. The tiger is a
night hunter, preying on many species, including
deer, buffalo and goats. Males and females socialize only during mating
season. Gestation lasts 104 to 106 days and females bear two to four
young.
Many cultures in Asia hold the tiger in high regard both
physically and spiritually. This respect over the years
has turned into rampant exploitation of the tiger, now at
the point of extinction. There are only a few thousand individuals left
on the planet.
