Polar Bear
The
polar bear can reach a shoulder height of five feet, three inches; a
standing height upwards of thirteen feet; and a weight exceeding 1,500
pounds—making it among the largest terrestrial carnivores. Like all
bears, polar bears can walk on their hind legs for short distances.
Polar bears live in the
icy regions of the far north. Living on ice floes, they spend most of
their time hunting seals, walrus and fish. Solitary by nature, male and
female polar bears congregate only for mating purposes. After eighteen
months of gestation, females have one to three cubs.
The future of
the polar bear is unknown because of changes to its environment. Continued
melting of the icecap and long-term concentration of fat-soluble
synthetic chemicals in the body of this top predator bode ill for the
survival of the species.
