Nile Crocodile
The
Nile Crocodile is the largest of the Crocodylidae family.
Some specimens have been reported as long as tenty-two feet and tip the
scales at a whopping 2,200 pounds.
Although most people think
of this amazing reptile as a solitary creature, it is in fact very
social. Females are not only protective of new hatchlings but will
also defend hatchlings from the previous year. Males
also protect the young with extreme prejudice. The Nile croc can live up to 100 years.
Nile
Crocodiles at one time were widely distributed over Africa south of the
Sahara and on offshore islands. Because of habitat destruction and
wanton hunting, though, the species will have to fight hard to survive through this century.
