Lion

Often called the king of the jungle, the lion is a massive cat. Surpassed in size only by certain breeds of tiger, the lion is nine feet long from head to tail and weighs as much as six hundred pounds. Lions are social animals, generally living in prides. Depending upon the availability of food, a pride may have several mature females and their young, along with one or two dominant males. Females generally do the hunting, while the male protects the pride from hyenas and competing males. Lions live in Africa and small regions in India. Gestation lasts for 105 days and two to four cubs are born.

Once threatened by over-hunting, the lion is one of the few large cats not threatened with extinction.
