Hippopotamus
One
of the largest land mammals on earth, the hippo stands five feet at the
shoulder and can weigh over 5,500 pounds. Well adapted to amphibious
life, the hippo spends most of its time submerged in water. At night it
comes on shore to feed on grasses. It swims well and lives in
groups of ten to fifteen. Hippos are aggressive and often fight with
one another. Gestation lasts 227 to 240 days and the female produces
one calf.
