Grizzly Bear
The
brown bear is divided into several subspecies: the grizzly, the kodiak
and the European brown bear. The grizzly is a massive bear only rivaled
by the polar bear in size. It stands six to ten feet at shoulder height
and can weigh over 1,700 pounds. The grizzly, like the black bear, is
essentially a vegetarian but prefers meat when it is available. The
grizzly lives in heavily wooded areas and moves over large tracts of
land in search of food. The grizzly lives in the far northwestern
woodlands of the U.S., north through parts of Canada, to Alaska.
Gestation lasts seven to eight months and a sow will give birth to one
to three tiny, blind, hairless cubs.
The grizzly bear once roamed
over most of North America. This ended after European settlers moved
westward and over-hunted the grizzly. Although now protected from
over-hunting, the grizzly has an uphill battle because of continued
habitat destruction.
