Golden Eagle
Golden
eagles are found mostly in the open expanses of the western states and occasionally in the eastern
states. They can also be found in Europe, Asia
and North Africa.
With
their incredible eyesight, golden eagles spend a good portion of their
time patrolling open spaces, soaring on thermals in search
of prey such as jackrabbits, prairie dogs,
waterfowl and snakes. Once it detects its prey,
the eagle swoops down at speeds approaching 200 mph.
Male
and female golden eagles share parenting duties. Females do
most of the incubating of up to four eggs. Both parents help with
gathering food for the young, which fledge between 72 and 84 days after being hatched. They
depend on their parents for food for another three months, after which the young move out to
find their own territories.
