Cheetah
The
fastest land mammal in the world, the cheetah can reach speeds of
seventy miles per hour or more when chasing down prey. Measuring seven
feet in length and weighing 130 pounds, the cheetah has a streamlined
appearance. The cheetah lives in Africa, Arabia and Iran, where it
spends it time hunting on the savanna and open grass lands. Its primary
quarry is the gazelle, which it runs down in quick, explosive bursts.
Gestation lasts ninety to ninety-five days and females bear one to
eight cubs.
Because cheetahs are shy, they are sensitive to changes
in their environment. As a result, the cheetah’s numbers have dropped
drastically and its survival is in question at this time.
