Cape Buffalo
There
are three subspecies of the cape buffalo or African buffalo: a smaller
one lives in the forested areas of western and central Africa; a medium
one in the grassy areas of the Sahara and east to the Sudan; and a
larger one in the savannas of eastern and southern Africa. Heavily
built, the African buffalo stands five feet, six inches at the shoulder
and can weigh as much as 1,800 pounds. Although unusual, African
Buffalo that live on the Sernegeti can gather in groups that can exceed
2,000 members. More often than not, herds consist of several hundred
members. The herd is dominated by an old bull, but is led by a
cow. Gestation lasts 330 to 345 days, after which a single calf is born.
