Black Puma
The
puma, also called the cougar or mountain lion, is a single species that
varies considerably in size and color. The larger varieties stand about
three feet at the shoulder and can weigh 225 pounds. The black puma is
a solitary animal that lives in South America. It is a powerful and
expert hunter and can jump up to twenty feet in a single bound. Active
both day and night in the wild, it has become strictly nocturnal in
areas inhabited by man. Females give birth to two to three cubs after a
ninety-day gestation period.
Pumas
once roamed the North and South American continent. Over-hunting and
habitat destruction have pushed many of the populations to the brink of
extinction.
