Asian Elephant

The Asian elephant, found mainly in India, is the second-largest land mammal on earth, behind only the African elephant. Asian elephants can be distinguished from their African counterparts by their smaller ears, shorter tusks and more docile disposition. Males stand as tall as ten feet and weigh almost six tons. Asian elephants live in herds run by elder matriarchs. Highly trainable, they have been used to perform heavy labor for hundreds of years. In most cases, this working arrangement has resulted in a close bond between man and elephant; but because of their gentle nature, many have been exploited for use in circuses and carnivals.

Asian elephants are not as threatened as African elephants, but habitat destruction and poaching are reducing their numbers significantly.
