American Bison
The
American bison is one of the largest members of the Bovidae family.
Males reach six feet at shoulder height and weigh up to 2,000
pounds. Male and female bison herd separately during the winter
months and regroup for mating purposes during the summer months.
There
was a time not long ago when herds were so numerous that it was said a man could walk
across the backs of the bison and not touch ground for miles.
This all changed when European settlers migrated westward.
With this expansion came the wholesale slaughter of the bison.
The bison were nearly wiped out and the Native
American tribes whose culture and survival depended on the bison were
decimated. Now the American bison is protected and its numbers
are continuing to grow, but the herds may never reach the great numbers that once
roamed free.
