American Bighorn
Revered
by North Americans for its tenacious nature, this powerful sheep stands
three feet, three inches at that shoulder and can weigh over three
hundred pounds. The most noticeable feature, of course, is its horns,
which both sexes possess. The horns are used by males against one
another, in battles lasting hours, in order to gain higher rank in the
herd and the right to mate with the ewes. Males with the largest horns
are considered to be of the highest rank. Once they have attained sexual
maturity, females give birth to one to two young.
