African Wild Dog

Called the wolf of the African plains, the African wild dog is master predator. It measures over four feet from head to tail and weighs about seventy pounds. The African wild dog is one the most efficient predators in the world. Working in a pack, the wild dog will take down much larger animals than himself. The prey is consumed quickly by as many as fifty individuals. Females have a gestation period of seventy-two days and can give birth to as many as twelve pups, with only a few usually surviving to maturity. Numbers have declined significantly because of habitat destruction.
