African Elephant
The African bull elephant is the largest living land animal. African elephants can weigh more then six tons and reach heights over ten feet tall. Elephants tend to live in organized herds that consist mostly of mature females and young juveniles. Usually, only one dominant bull elephant is allowed to live among the females. Young males, after they have reached maturity, are forced out by the dominant male.
The African elephant’s survival was in doubt due to poaching for its valuable ivory tusks. In 1989, international trade in ivory was banned, stemming the slaughter of these marvelous animals. As a result, elephants have recovered to a degree, but such efforts must continue in order to ensure the survival of the species.
